58/61 Mount Street, Dublin

Within the campus of the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street, this project comprises the refurbishment and adaptation of four buildings on Mount Street to provide facilities for the Merrion Fertility Clinic and offices for consultants’ clinics. It includes a basement-level extension to the rear and a glazed lift to serve all floors of the existing buildings.

The refurbished buildings are protected structures and the project avoided as much as possible any interference with the existing fabric. The integrity of the original rooms is retained and reinstated as much as possible. Sub-division of rooms, where necessary, is carried out by the use of new partitioning systems clearly distinguished from the original fabric. These are kept low in height to avoid impacting original cornices and to allow the original proportions of the existing rooms to be perceived.

The new extension and glazed lift are both in a contemporary design. This clear contrast allows the new elements to be arranged more freely as lightweight glazed constructions that sit free, visually, from the envelope of the existing buildings.
