Gooldshill Housing, Mallow, Co. Cork
The Gooldshill development was commissioned by Cork County Council to develop social and affordable housing on a twenty-eight acre green-field site at the edge of Mallow town. The scheme included the design and delivery of a creche and a community centre which has led the project to be and exemplary social development scheme enhancing the area and providing quality housing with a conscious approach to design and costs.
The scheme was arranged to achieve a series of neighbourhood zones with a variety of housing types and groupings in closes, terraces, streets and roads. This approach was adopted to promote a sense of vibrancy and community in a relatively large development. The site topography was a natural influence, with existing features such as trees and hedgerows retained and incorporated into the design.
The scheme delivered 210 residential units including a variety of scale and typology allowing the scheme to accommodate varying family sizes and ages. This has led the community to develop organically, providing a strong sense of identity and social cohesion.
