Haughton Building, IoT Carlow

Reddy A+U were commissioned to design and deliver a new 3-storey educational building on the existing campus of the Institute of Technology, Carlow. The building comprises 5 large lecture theatres, 10 classrooms, 8 teaching spaces centred around a communal atrium. Additional facilities were provided including computer laboratories, meeting rooms anfd the administration offices. Reddy A+U also delivered the external works and ancillary facilities required by the Higher Education Facility.

The client provided an ambitious brief which included the teaching facilities but also provided the Institute with a new executive management area comprising the main board room and office suites for heads of Institute, and associated support accommodation.

The building is focused around a large atrium space that can accommodate performance, study and provides event space for the Institute as a whole. The development forms the gateway and marker for the campus when approached from the important Kilkenny road. It was also important to the development team that the new building initiated the wider drive to improve the facilities and underlines the revitalisation of the existing external spaces and incorporation of external seating for students to sit, study and socialise.
