An Bhialann, National University of Ireland, Galway

An Bhialann is one of a number of refurbishments projects undertaken by RA+U for the National University of Ireland in Galway. The project includes the design and installation of the main catering facilities for the student campus. The scheme included renovation of the existing buildings and some strategic interventions including glass pavilions in the courtyard. These signify the facilities below and bring significant natural light into the catering spaces.

The facility is one of the social hubs of the university and is a key component in the regeneration of the university facilities. The masterplan, also by Reddy A+U, reinforced the importance of the facility. Four glazed light wells or ‘pods’ provide natural daylight into the existing restaurant below.

The restaurant was refurbished and the adjacent commercial area expanded. This included works to the staff and cooking facilities and work was needed to the servicing and supply areas. An Bhialann also provides catering across the university for events.
