Ireland’s planning system ‘no longer fit for purpose’

Ireland’s current planning system is considered outdated and ineffective, especially in the face of pressing challenges like housing shortages, infrastructure demands, and attracting investment.

Tony Reddy, Reddy A+U Chairman, warns that the discretionary, case-by-case planning model is no longer fit for purpose. A shift toward a more proactive, integrated approach, including clearer zoning, early public consultation, and the introduction of Urban Development Zones would give certainty for communities, planners, and investors alike.

With housing shortages, infrastructure pressures, and investor confidence all at stake, the debate on planning reform is becoming increasingly urgent.
