The Challenge

Situated on the site of a former nondescript office development, the location at Camden Row provided an opportunity to create a piece of urban infill that addressed the context and the park of St. Audens opposite to the south.

The street is characterised by an eclectic mix of uses including a cash and carry, a third level research facility and residential uses. These limitations are addressed by reimagining the urban environment to provide more pedestrian-friendly space and a new overlooked public realm interface with the ground floor and park opposite.

The Story

In composing a suite of uses at ground floor and the roof level, we incorporated spaces for art and performance in compliance with zoning regulations, and through clever design mitigated the potential for overlooking adjacent properties, ensuring a sustainable use and project functionality. These challenges were addressed through strategic design choices.

The façade features a rhythmic arrangement of slanted windows, which effectively prevent overlooking while creating an engaging visual aesthetic for passersby. Additionally, the hotel's restaurant is designed with concealed storage cabinets to facilitate the storage of furniture, allowing the space to be easily transformed into an event venue in the evening.

The Outcome

The outcome is a contemporary hotel that effectively meets all stipulated requirements through the implementation of innovative and strategic design solutions, thereby maximising the project's overall functionality and aesthetic appeal.
