The Challenge
The challenge was to envision the future of learning in a post-pandemic world. To avoid assumptions, we conducted a structured survey with over 600 students and a steering committee review. The survey assessed preferences across 7 study modes, ranging from Silent Study Mode 1, designed for quiet work, to Study Mode 5, focused on collaborative, short-duration activities with moderate noise levels. Study Modes 6 and 7, developed in collaboration with occupational therapist Linda Horgan and UCD's ASIAM, cater to neurodiverse needs.
The Story
This project involved the refurbishment of a 1972 Brutalist-style building by Sir Basil Spence, Glover, and Ferguson. It transforms the structure into a cohesive "Holistic Ecosystem," preventing future piecemeal interventions and the need for additional space. The reimagined design creates a welcoming, inclusive, accessible, and safe learning environment that incorporates technological advances and the digitisation of books.
The Outcome
This project showcases an exceptionally sustainable and inclusive approach to older building stock by increasing capacity and eliminating the need for new construction. The once austere and underutilised space has been transformed into one of the most favoured and supportive study environments on campus.
