The Challenge

From the outset, continued innovation and excellence in elderly care facility design were key considerations. Building upon the success of previous projects, such as the Fern Dean nursing home completed by Reddy A+U in 2017, the team sought to refine their approach and expertise in this area. Making the building feel like the resident’s home rather than a sterile healthcare facility, while also meeting specific HIQA clinical and occupational requirements, was the main objective.

The Story

Thoughtful design centred around the resident’s well-being remained at the forefront of the design concept. As humans, we are sensory, emotional, and intelligent beings who need to feel connected to our spaces. This sense of connection was achieved through careful selection of textures, materials, artwork, photos and objects that resonated with the residents, their history and life experiences. These objects connect the residents not only to the surrounding spaces but also offer a sense of belonging, nudging conversation about their lives, and acting as memory triggers for some occupants with dementia.

The scale of the home was intentionally reduced to create a more domestic feel by zoning each area with its own unique identity, reminiscent of a large country estate. Wings were aptly named the Conservatory, Pantry, Drawing Room, and Ballroom, each designed with a modern interpretation of these historical spaces. This design approach also provided intuitive wayfinding, making the building more familiar and comforting for residents.

Particular attention was given to fabric and wallpaper choices. Bespoke day-room chairs were upholstered in antimicrobial, hygienic fabrics that were tactile and non-clinical, ensuring they were easy to grip for less mobile occupants.

To accommodate residents who often need significant rest throughout the day, a bespoke clinical bed was designed which features an upholstered headboard and footboard in textured, antimicrobial fabric. All bedrooms were fitted with soft glide twin-track blackout and sheer curtains with easy-grab pull rods, as well as dimmable wall sconces.

Sustainability was also a key consideration; finishes were specified based on their eco-friendliness and recycled materials, locally produced items, and woods from renewable sources were used wherever possible.

The Outcome

This project delivered the highest possible clinical and healthcare standards in a warm, comforting and homely environment. Through a sensitive design which promotes independence, well-being and therapeutic activities, it proves that elderly care does not need to look like hospital care.
