The Challenge

A key challenge was to retain the unique architectural characteristics of the church whilst providing a multifunctional and comfortable library space which would be a joy to visitors and staff alike.

The Story

Located within an architectural conservation area, the church building has been renovated and expanded to ensure its preservation while creating a dramatic public library space for the community. The design offers an innovative, demountable solution with a flexible hub space that meets the modern library's needs for IT, storage, study, performance, information, and services. This adaptable approach allows for future deconstruction, reconfiguration, and reuse.

The Outcome

The final building serves as a public library that anchors the local community and creates a flexible, multi-use educational hub. By carefully restoring and enhancing the structure, a significant part of Athy's architectural fabric has been preserved and enhanced.
