The Challenge

Our brief was to assess the needs of modern students and design a space that supports essential aspects of their daily lives, including study, technology, social interaction, recreation, health, and fitness. Our goal was to create an environment that fosters a sense of community and interaction among students while also providing quiet areas and dedicated study zones.

The Story

Both buildings feature main hubs in their reception areas, equipped with gaming zones, TVs, gaming pods, a feature food truck, group seating, and small breakout spaces. The open-plan layout is versatile, accommodating events and daily activities. Connected to these hubs are ’Seating Huts’, offering quieter, private spaces for individuals or small groups.

Each building includes a dedicated study zone, isolated from the main amenities to maintain low noise levels. These zones provide group and individual study desks, group study "huts" with smart screens, and private study rooms. The design emphasises a sense of ownership, with flexible spaces that students can book or use as needed. One building features a ‘Club Lounge’ for events, Netflix viewing, or quiet conversations. Each building also has a cinema room available for movies or presentations. Additional facilities include a fitness studio for activities like yoga and Pilates.

The Outcome

Extensive research resulted in a fully bespoke, vibrant design with the individual needs of today’s students at its centre. RA+U Interiors were involved in all aspects of the design including lighting design, M&E coordination and joinery. Bespoke joinery and lighting pieces give the space a unique identity, setting it apart from other student housing projects.
