Schull Garda Area HQ

A crisp modern building with a civic presence was realised at the entrance to this small town.

Key facts

  • Scale 430m2

The Story

Initial options for establishing a Garda area HQ in Schull included adapting and reusing an existing building on the site. However, it was decided that a new-build facility would be more suitable. The design prioritised operational considerations such as security and confidentiality, while also recognising the development's significance to the town's civic infrastructure.

The Challenge

With operational restrictions limiting the potential for openings in the building’s exterior, achieving a design that would feel receptive and accessible for everyday users was a challenge.

The Outcome

In developing the design, the public perception of the building was prioritised as much as possible. From the street, the building is visually light with neat detailing and a tranquil colour pallet of white, buff and grey. On entry, a double-height reception area is a light, airy arrival space decorated with warm, locally commissioned artwork. ‘Behind the scenes’ the restricted, areas of the building are arranged to serve the rigid functional requirements of a garda station.
