The Challenge

To provide a first-class convention centre sitting below existing office accommodation. The project also included the design of a ground floor reception area and a suite of conference rooms on the upper level. This was the second phase of a development behind the Radisson Hotel on Golden Lane, which featured a new civic square and an extension of the existing hotel.

The Story

The building comprises a large double height event space for business conferences or exhibitions catering for up to 1,100 delegates with pre-conference suites and support accommodation. Further meeting spaces are provided at first floor level overlooking Ship Street and the new route between Le Pole Square and the public realm.

Flexible, ergonomic furniture solutions were integral to the success of the design. This is demonstrated by the main ballroom which can be divided into two rooms as needed, with hidden storage walls for quick reconfigurations. Audio-visual and acoustic solutions, developed over six months with Allegro and H.A.S., ensure excellent sound separation and quality. The ballroom also features automated lighting and projector rigs that drop from 5.2 meters for maintenance and customisation.

The Outcome

The Royal Dublin Convention Centre has had a significant impact on its surroundings and creates an important addition to Dublin’s business tourism. Its adjacency to amenities creates a tourism and business hub that generates revenue and local jobs in the leisure industry, whilst celebrating and respecting the sites central position in historic Dublin.
