MacDonagh Junction, Kilkenny

Regeneration of a brownfield site in Kilkenny to incorporate a mixed use development anchored around a shopping centre and including leisure, office, hotel and residential.

Key facts
  • Location Kilkenny, Ireland.
  • Scale 5.1 ha (12.6 acres)

The Challenge

Extensive use of prefabrication and off-site construction reduced carbon footprint and accelerated the construction programme.

The Story

A number of protected structures were sensitively integrated as focal points of the development: the Union Workhouse, the old Railway Station and associated brick arcade walls and the Railway Goods Shed.

The Outcome

Commercial and cultural uses achieve an ‘18-hour life’ in the public areas of the development. New pedestrian-only public squares and streets are created and existing pedestrian routes enhanced.
